We are pleased to announce that Belong has been commissioned by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), in partnership with the Local Government Association (LGA) to write new national guidance and develop training aimed at supporting community cohesion.
With input from a range of members, officers and partners across local governments remit, this guidance will address the challenges faced on the frontline and truly reflect the realities on the ground. Drawing heavily on practical insights from Belong’s recent place-based projects the guidance is expected to be published later this year and will be followed by a full programme of engagement, training, and support to help local government and MHCLG staff. This programme will run until Summer 2026.
In delivering this work we are delighted to welcome Rebecca Inskip to the team, Rebecca brings a wealth of experience and expertise with a strong background working with communities and governments locally, nationally and internationally.
Rebecca Inskip, Belong’s new Director of Programmes for Local Government, said:
“I’m excited to join Belong to lead the creation of this much-needed national guidance. Since starting my career in local government in 2012, I’ve seen a real need for guidance and training to help practitioners respond to changes in our society. From tackling misinformation and disinformation to managing demonstrations and crises, this guidance will fill an important gap. Belong’s strong track record of working in true partnership with councils means we’re in a great position to develop guidance that will shape how we think about community cohesion and help build stronger, more inclusive communities.”
Kelly Fowler, CEO of the Belong Network, said:
“I am delighted that Belong has been commissioned to deliver this new national guidance. Since Summer last year we have been working in towns and cities across the UK affected by the violent disorder. We have seen first hand the need for this work as local authorities, their partners and civil society organisations have worked hard to heal divisions and address a range of challenges impacting our communities. The guidance couldn’t be more timely. We will use our experience and insights and those of our members and partners to create guidance and training that is robust, practical and makes a real difference.”
