We are thrilled to announce Prof john a. powell, director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley as our third and final keynote speaker at the Belong Network’s annual conference Belonging 2022: Leading on Social Cohesion.
Prof powell is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties, structural racism, housing, poverty, and democracy. Director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, the research institute brings together scholars, community advocates, communicators, and policymakers to identify and eliminate the barriers to an inclusive, just, and sustainable society and to create transformative change toward a more equitable world. Prof powell holds the Robert D. Haas Chancellor’s Chair in Equity and Inclusion and is a Professor of Law, African American Studies, and Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley. He has won several awards including the 2021 Housing Hero Award, 2021 John W. Gardner Leadership Award, and the Convergence Bridge-Building Leadership Award for 2022. He is the author of several books, including his most recent work, Racing to Justice: Transforming our Concepts of Self and Other to Build an Inclusive Society.
At Belonging 2022 Prof powell will be discussing what we can learn from work to bridge divides and develop an inclusive sense of belonging – and how we can prevent ‘othering’ and allow for constructive disagreement without harming the underlying social fabric. This keynote address at Belonging 2022, taking place in central Manchester on 2 December, will be followed by a short Q and A.
